Cytoplasmic Genetic Male Sterility in Plants – a Molecular Perspective
نویسنده
چکیده
Male sterility is defined as the failure of plants to produce functional anthers, pollen, or male gametes. First documentation of male sterility came in 1763 when Kölreuter observed anther abortion within species and specific hybrids. It is more prevalent than female sterility, probably because, male sporophyte and gametophyte less protected from environment than ovule and embryo sac. Male sterility is easy to detect because a large number of pollen are produced and could be easily studied. It can also be easily assayed through staining technique (carmine, lactophenol or iodine); while detection of female sterility requires crossing. Male sterility has propagation potential in nature since it can still set seed and is important for crop breeding, while female sterility does not. Male sterility can be aroused spontaneously via mutations in nuclear and/or cytoplasmic genes.

Molecular Genetics of Mitochondrial Respiratory/ATP-Related Genes in Relation to Cytoplasmic Male-Sterility of Higher Plants
With the sequencing of the entire mitochondrial genome for some species, including Arabidopsis thaliana, Brassica napus, Beta vulgaris, Marchantia polymorpha, Oryza sativa, and Zea mays it is promising to explore the molecular genetics of mitochondrial respiratoryrelated genes in relation to some special traits with an emphasis on cytoplasmic male-sterility unique to plant mitochondria. Mitocho...

Rice is one of the most important model crop plants whose heterosis has been well-exploited in commercial hybrid seed production via a variety of types of male-sterile lines. Hybrid rice cultivation area is steadily expanding around the world, especially in Southern Asia. Characterization of genes and proteins related to male sterility aims to understand how and why the male sterility occurs, a...
متن کاملMale-sterility induction in transgenic tobacco plants with an unedited atp9 mitochondrial gene from wheat.
Cytoplasmic male sterility in plants is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction. We have proposed that a nuclear-encoded chimeric peptide formed by mitochondrial sequences when imported into the mitochondria may impair organelle function and induce male sterility in plants. A model developed to test this hypothesis is reported here. Assuming that the editing process in higher plant mitochondr...

Genetic male sterility is controlled by one pair of ressesive allele (aa) in sugar beet. This trait is used in most breeding programes. The exsistance of the character in a line or population facilitates transfer of important trait to the breeding material (for example resistance to plant disease). Also, it is possible to increase genetic diversity of monogerm populations by using genetic ma...
